Current Work

Data Analyst/Developer at Movement Gyms

In my current role, I work with a very small team of just 4 people. While our job is for an established company, technology in the climbing industry is not widely prevalent. As a result, our team shares many similar experiences to that of a small start up. We often share work outside of our strict role, and our job roles are broad and encompasing.

Some of the tasks that I perform include:

  • Developing reports
  • Creating data pipelines for ETL
  • Managing our internal data infrastructure
  • Creating predictions and models
  • Working with the web developer on ad hoc Word Press tasks
  • Developing small internal applications
  • Deploying internal applications
  • Gathering requirements from stakeholders
  • Managing a project life cycle and working from start to finish
  • Developing new standard for our team as it pertains to development
  • Determining the best tools for new web development
  • Creating automations on our Linux server
  • Managed aspects of the AWS console (EC2, ECS, ECS, Fargate)

Some of the skills I use day to day include:

  • MySQL
  • PowerBI
  • Fabric (admin, data flows, and permission management)
  • Python (Streamlit, Flask, and machine learning tools like SciPy, NumPy, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, etc. )
  • WordPress
  • Bash (Ubuntu)

Background

I grew up in Houston, TX. My first exposure to programming was through learning about Minecraft servers as a kid. I frequented a local hackerspace – TXRX – where I was inspired to learn Python through the series “Learn Python The Hard Way.” I followed that by learning about WordPress and HTML/CSS through both Udacity courses and my mom’s SEO business.

I went to school to pursue a passion of music, but upon graduation I kept finding myself coming back to computer science. Throughout my school years, I worked in and out of climbing gyms. Afterwards, I continued that career path and spent many of my free hours learning as much as I could about computer science. From fundamentals about programming, to web development, to machine learning and AI techniques, anything that expanded my knowledge and interests, I pursued learning.

I eventually went back to school to obtain my Masters Degree in Data Analytics. I started doing analytics for the climbing gym I worked with until now where I work full time as a data analyst helping the business grow by providing more real time and more in depth analytics to key stakeholders within the company.
